I stood in the street in the morning,
On a blue and shiny day.
“Come into the house of God,” they said,
“Come into the house and pray.”
O there was sunlight on my head
And birdsong in my ears,
But I went into the house of God,
Where I had not been for years.
A voice began, “Ye hungry come
To me; ye shall be fed.”
But in the street a tram rolled by,
And I heard not what he said.
I wanted to know of whom he spoke
And who it was that bled.
But a lurching lorry lumbered by,
And I heard not what he said.
